Work for Our Water Resources.

Help protect one of Florida’s most vital resources — water — with a summer internship at the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District). The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources, minimize flood risks, and ensure the public’s water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6 million people in west-central Florida as directed by state law.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain real work experience and hands-on skills while supporting the District’s mission of protecting water resources. This position is a 90-day engagement, working up to 40 hours per week.

Compensation

$14.00 - $22.00 per hour, depending on position, education level, and previous related experience.

 Examples of Essential Functions

  • Compile and review data from files, databases, maps and publications
  • Respond to, or where appropriate, routes citizen's questions to applicable staff 
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure projects are meeting required standards
  • Organize records or files with use word documents and spreadsheet software
  • Assist with repair and maintenance of District structures and facilities
  • Collect data and provide analysis and reports
  • Review aerial photographs and information on GIS/ArcMap
  • Attend meetings and participate in discussions related water resources
  • Understand and apply environmental policies, regulations, and guidelines
  • Provide data to make recommendations for management decisions
  • Plans, schedules and performs tasks related to assigned projects

Working Conditions

These positions may require some fieldwork with the remainder of time spent in an office setting.  Work environments vary by assigned business unit and position duties. 

Required Credentials for Summer Student Intern

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or other recognized educational or vocational program at least half-time and registered for Fall classes
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students
  • Upload Unofficial Transcript to application or profile
  • Have the availability to work near the maximum 40 hours per week
  • Valid Florida driver’s license

Required Degree Level: Bachelors or Master’s level program, or certification program

Additional Details

This position is typically scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Student Internship positions are not eligible for insured medical benefits or remote work.

Travel Required: Yes. Some travel, using District vehicle, within District's coverage area.
