Trip Leader
Moondance Trip Leaders are responsible for small groups of students, bringing them through meaningful experiences in both domestic and international settings. Each trip presents unique environments, from backcountry camping to front-country accommodations, requiring leaders to adapt quickly and maintain a high standard of safety, professionalism, and fun.
Trip Leaders are responsible for creating an environment where every student feels supported, challenged, and included. Leaders serve as positive role models and mentors while managing all aspects of the group in the field. Strong judgment, adaptability, and effective communication are essential, as leaders make real-time decisions that shape the success of each trip.
Ideal candidates are confident in a shared leadership role, comfortable managing group dynamics, and experienced in working with teenagers. Applicants should bring strong leadership and risk management skills, a collaborative mindset, and a genuine enthusiasm for leading students through meaningful experiences. Technical outdoor skills (such as backpacking, backcountry cooking, river crossing, etc.) are beneficial but not required, as leaders are placed on a specific trip based on experience and will learn other necessary skills for their trip at Staff Training.
- A strong desire to work with teenagers
- Minimum 21 years old (avg. age 23) Moondance alumni who are 20 by June 5th, 2027 can apply to be a third leader for British Columbia, Colorado Trail, California, and Maui
- College graduate or college student
- Current WFA or WFR certification (Valid through August 3rd; not required at time of application)
- Current CPR certification (Valid through August 3rd; not required at time of application)
- Valid driver’s license
- Excellent driving record
- The ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
- Available for our 12-day Staff Training in mid-May through Debrief in early August
- Tetanus immunization within the last 10 years
