Grounds/Horticulture Intern
This hands-on internship offers experience in arboretum collections, natural areas, horticulture, and grounds management. Interns will build practical skills in plant identification, landscape problem-solving, and sustainable maintenance while working with staff and volunteers.
Key Responsibilities & Learning Areas:
Arboretum & Collections
- Assist with collections management, weeding, and pruning
- Learn to identify 10 useful woody plants
- Understand how plants solve common landscape challenges
- Support watering and irrigation equipment management
- Identify diseases, pests, and abiotic plant problems
Natural Areas
- Assist with deer fence management
- Manage woody invasive species in natural settings
- Support resident volunteer activities
Horticulture & Gardens
- Identify 10 common weeds and learn IPM strategies
- Help manage and work with volunteers
- Diagnose and solve herbaceous plant problems
- Learn and present 10 useful garden perennials
Grounds & Landscape Maintenance
- Assist with resident garden renovations
- Mulching, weeding, string trimming, and general maintenance
- Support basic hardscaping tasks
- Learn turfgrass establishment, renovation, and management
The grounds/horticulture intern will gain hands-on horticultural experience, plant ID skills, exposure to landscape and natural area management, and volunteer coordination experience.
