Internship Title: Operations & HR Internship
Internship Description: Our Operations interns partners with our Operations and HR Department at our downtown DC office on the organization's business operations. Interns report to the Operations Associate but work with the full team. Our Ops internship is an opportunity to delve into how the organization is run on the business side. Day to day, that means helping with internal communications, working with Ops on technology and systems improvement projects, gaining office management skills, and learning about the Human Resources world of recruitment, onboarding, compensation, and benefits. It’s a great opportunity for someone who is interested in how a non-profit is organized and run. We look forward to having you join our team!
The Summer internship lasts from May until mid-August at the latest. We have 1 intern spot that we are recruiting for this season.
Departments Assisting: Ayuda’s Operations and Human Resources Department
Individuals Responsible to: Joe Fortney, Operations Associate (Principal Supervisor); Iovanna Membreno, Operations & HR Associate; and Aracely Melendez, Technology and Data Manager
Responsibilities:
Operations interns will have a great opportunity to learn the business side of non-profit, from hiring to staffing, managing technology to communication with a Board of Directors. Internship projects include things like:
Helping roll out a new technology system
Writing step-by-step procedures for systems or tasks (these make great work samples)
Joining in the hiring process – posting new positions, reviewing candidate applications, taking part in interviews, and helping with onboarding new staff
Researching and gathering market data on salaries for our benchmarking our staff’s salaries
Updating our onboarding platform to make it more automated and user-friendly
Researching solutions to make our work better (a great skill for the workplace)
Creating or updating visual information pieces like an Organizational Chart or graphic posters of core values
Supporting office management, such as ordering supplies and helping make the office welcoming
Helping with knowledge management projects, such as organizing system information
Joining the team as we prepare for our annual audit, quarterly board meetings and other touchpoints with the partners who help oversee our work
Working with the Fun Committee to organize staff and intern appreciation events
Putting together reports for the Board of Directors
Helping the Development team prepare for donor events
Traveling to our Silver Spring, MD and Fairfax, VA offices with the Operations Team to support the staff on the ground at those offices (all metro accessible)
Supporting technology improvement projects
Taking advantage of opportunities to learn more about immigration law, family law, social services, language access and immigrant rights in the DC, MD, and VA
Position Qualifications:
Required:
Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate program
Strong interested in how non-profits run
Good at problem-solving and finding creative solutions
Organized and a strong communicator
Fluent in English; Spanish language skills a plus
Willingness to jump in wherever needed
Results oriented with the ability to meet self-imposed deadlines.
Preferred:
Fluency in Spanish or another second language
Technical experience in any of the following: Microsoft Excel, WordPress, Canva, MS Visio
Based in the Washington, DC region. Able to report to the office multiple times a week.
Commitment: We are looking for a summer intern who can dedicate up to 16 - 24 hours per week for 12-14 weeks to provide administrative and programmatic support. The internship would begin sometime in May up through August. The exact start and end dates are flexible. Interns are expected to assist with internship responsibilities 2-3 days a week, with 2 days a week needed in the office. Interns have holidays off and vacation time available.
Compensation: This internship offers a stipend of $400 to cover the costs associated with completion of in-person days (transportation, gas, parking, food, etc.). Stipends are determined based on the number of in-person days per week the specific internship requires. Interns are welcome to complete more in person days than required, but such days are not included in the internship stipend.
Technology: We will provide the intern with a laptop, and they will need to have access to reliable internet connection on remote days for video conferences and email communication.
