Social Media Intern, Oklahoma

This is a volunteer internship that will require up to 4 hours per week. 

Social media internship, Oklahoma

Reports to: Executive Director

Time Commitment 3-4 hours per week (this includes a required meeting every Tuesday 8pm-9pm ET)

Location Remote

Position: Volunteer/Unpaid

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Content Strategy Development: The intern will learn to research and identify content opportunities, understand target audiences, and contribute to a content calendar. This includes learning how to align social media content with Defense of Democracy's mission.

Multi-Platform Content Creation: The intern will gain experience in creating a variety of content formats (e.g., text posts, graphics, short videos) tailored for different social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.

Brand Voice and Messaging: The intern will learn how to maintain a consistent brand voice and messaging across all social media channels, ensuring all content accurately reflects the organization's values and mission.

Visual Storytelling: The intern will develop skills in using visual media (photos, graphics, and video) to tell compelling stories that engage the audience and highlight the impact of the organization's work.

Technical and Analytical Skills:

Social Media Management Tools: The intern will become proficient in using social media management platforms (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer, or native scheduling tools) to schedule posts, monitor activity, and analyze performance.

Analytics and Reporting: The intern will learn to track and interpret key performance indicators (KPIs) such as engagement rates, reach, and follower growth. They will be able to use this data to evaluate the effectiveness of their posts and suggest improvements.

SEO Best Practices: The intern will gain a basic understanding of how to use keywords and hashtags to improve the visibility of social media posts and drive traffic to the organization's website.

Professional and Interpersonal Skills:

Communication and Collaboration: The intern will learn to communicate effectively with staff and other volunteers to gather information, coordinate content, and ensure their work supports broader organizational goals.

Community Management: The intern will gain experience in engaging with the online community by responding to comments and messages, fostering a positive online environment, and representing the organization professionally.

Time Management and Organization: The intern will learn to manage their time effectively to meet deadlines for the content calendar and other social media tasks.

Adaptability and Responsiveness: The intern will learn to respond quickly to new trends, current events, or changes in social media algorithms, and to adapt content as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Content Strategy & Ideation:

Research and identify new content relevant to protecting public education and supporting educators.

Follow a content calendar to ensure a consistent flow of publications.

Collaborate with marketing, design, and other volunteer teams to align content with broader marketing campaigns and  objectives.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency with content management systems (CMS) like CapCut, TikTok studio, and others.

Knowledge of SEO principles and tools a plus (otherwise we will train).

Familiarity with graphic design and video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc).

Experience with social media management and analytics platforms.

Soft Skills:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong research and organizational abilities.

Exceptional attention to detail and proofreading skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

A creative mindset with a passion for storytelling and brand building.

Qualifications

  • Residency requirement: has knowledge of politics and issues within their state relating to public schools
  • Proficient in Google applications
  • Proficient in social media platforms including Bluesky, Instagram, Threads.
