Fitness & Wellness Summer 2026 Intern

The goal of our Fitness & Wellness Internship program is to provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in developing, organizing, implementing and evaluating community fitness & wellness programs. The position will be responsible for supporting the City of Virginia Beach, Parks & Recreation Department and its Fitness & Wellness Unit with the aim of developing a culture of wellness and in promoting healthy lifestyle choices for the COVB Community.  

Interns will have the ability to work with various populations throughout the Virginia Beach area.  They will assist with the operation and implementation of health, wellness, fitness programs, events, and services provided by the City of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Department, Fitness & Wellness Unit.  Interns will promote the mission of the department in action and spirit.

 

Day to Day duties will include, but are not limited to:

 

Fitness & Wellness:

 

  • Assist with aspects of program/services delivery such as obtaining participants, reserving space, preparing materials/equipment, and coordination with site contact.
  • Implement a variety of coaching cues/techniques.
  • Develop, organize, market, implement, and evaluate a specific fitness/wellness program for a recreation center/staff/community (to be determined).
    • Evaluate programs, analyze outcomes, and report results.
    • Prepare and deliver a final presentation of program site outcomes and results.
  • Market and promote programs/services through the development of flyers, handouts, emails, newsletters, and social media content
  • Evaluate programs, analyze outcomes, and report results.

  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
     

 

Personal Training:

  • Observe and evaluate Personal Training sessions.
  • Facilitate/Implement (Certified Personal Trainers Only) introductory personal training services (i.e. Fitness Consultations and Fitness Assessments).
  • Set-up and Organize Personal Training Folders.
  • Design exercise prescriptions for clients based on health profile and personal goals.
  • Facilitate/Implement (Certified Personal Trainers Only) Personal Training Sessions.
  • Review of personal training client folder and programs.
  • Review of personal training revenue process.
  • Attend team meetings.

 

Group Fitness

  • Observe and evaluate Group Fitness classes.
  • Team- teach a group fitness class (Certified Group Fitness Instructors Only).
  • Obtain member feedback for group fitness programming.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations of group fitness programming.
  • Attend team meetings. 
  • This position is also expected to deliver excellent customer service in a professional and dignified manner through effective communication skills, ability to multitask, providing accurate information on programs and services offered, and address problems and complaints in a timely manner to enhance our image and program operation.



     

Physical Demands:

As an intern, you must be able to:

  • Stand for extended periods.
  • Move around on a variety of uneven surfaces, including sand, gravel, grass, and asphalt.
  • Lift and move up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Perform physical tasks such as kneeling, crouching, bending, and carrying equipment as needed.
  • Work primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow.
     

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicant must be flexible with their schedules to be compatible with program and site schedules.
  • Applicant must have a current CPR/AED/First Aid certification.
  • Nationally Accredited Fitness Certification (i.e. ACSM-CPT, ACE-CPT/GFI, NASM-CPT/GFI, etc.) preferred.

Schedule & Hours:

Candidates typical work week will be 10-40 hours unless otherwise agreed upon. The schedule will be varied by days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and program schedule needs. The applicant is responsible to provide their own transportation to and from work during the internship.

Expected Duration:

May 4th, 2026 – July 31st, 2026  (Approximately 13 weeks, can be adjusted based upon school requirements).

Required Education:  

Candidates pursuing a degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Health Education, Recreation Management, Therapeutic Recreation, or similar related field

  • Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student (in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or PhD program) and be in good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university.
