Communications and Social Media Intern

 

Spring Internship:

            Seasonal: Approx. Feb.– May 

            15 hours per week, in the Joliet office 

            $15/hour, no benefits 

            

Under the supervision of the State Senator, Chief of Staff, and District Staff, the intern will complete tasks related to legislation, community events, and day-to-day tasks in the district office. 

 

These tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Draft engaging and informative social media posts highlighting community events, legislative initiatives, and constituent services.
  • Edit and organize photos and videos for use across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), Threads, and LinkedIn.
  • Schedule and post content using approved tools and timelines
  • Monitor engagement metrics and community feedback to inform future posts
  • Maintain consistent visual branding and tone in coordination with Senate Communications staff
  • Support rapid response communications as needed for breaking news or district updates
  • Represent the Senator at community events, forums, and 1online webinars. Collect newsletter sign-ups, distribute relevant literature and business cards, network with attendees, and submit brief event summary report
  • Capture photos of visiting constituents, partner organizations, and elected officials
  • Maintain digital records (data entry)
  • Conduct basic research and fact-checking to support accurate and informed communications.
  • Design flyers, infographics, or social media graphics to support legislative efforts

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills 
  • Strong organizing skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Ability to work on occasional evenings and weekends 
  • Ability to effectively engage people of diverse social, faith, economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds
  • Comfortable engaging with the public in diverse community settings 
  • Reliable transportation to attend events across the 43rd district 
  • Graphic design skills/experience
  • Interest in journalism and/or photography
  • Interest in government and/or public service
