Work Student III - ELT-NCS-25007

This job indicates the start date of February 1 with a year-long engagement. However, since this recruitment is ongoing, a given start date may be earlier and may be later and will depend on a person’s hours per week that will be set up at the time of selection. Correspondingly, the end date for a selectee might be sooner than February 1, 2027.  There is flexibility based on the individual situation.

Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS, an agency within Fairfax County government, is dedicated to promoting the well-being of individuals, families, and communities in Fairfax County by offering a wide range of recreation, educational, and developmental programs. NCS fosters community engagement by identifying areas of need and enhancing the county's ability to serve those needs. The department connects residents with resources that promote equity and create positive outcomes for people of all ages and abilities.

We are seeking work students to join our dynamic team.  Under the close instructional supervision of the assigned agency or department, the Work Student III will perform a variety of entry-level professional duties designed to provide youth with hands-on work experience, career exploration, and professional development within a specific industry or organization, all while receiving mentorship.  The Work Student will serve on committees, working groups, and advisory boards, sharing their lived experiences and offering insights into operations and impact of programs, services, policies, and systems on themselves, their peers, and their communities, including relevant board authorities and commissions (BACs).

Additionally, Work Student III will assist with community outreach efforts to identify individuals and communities in support of the One Fairfax policy. The role also involves participating in professional learning opportunities by attending meetings, workshops, and training sessions, as well as engaging with staff to gain a comprehensive understanding of understanding of organizational goals, procedures, and industry best practices.  The Work Student III may also conduct research on industry trends, competitors, or specific projects assigned by their supervisor.

Description: 

Program Delivery: 

  • Assists with populations with diverse functional, cultural, and economic needs in specific service areas based on established standards, best practices, and techniques. 
  • Assists with special event planning and logistics, including setup, breakdown, and cleanup, as needed. 
  • Facilitate a variety of recreational, educational, and cultural programs and actively promote positive behavior interventions.
  • Ensures the well-being of individuals and responds appropriately and promptly to any emergencies or urgent situations in the workplace.

Customer Service and Community Support: 

  • Assists with community outreach efforts to identify individual(s) and communities in support of the One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Policy.
  • Applies the One Fairfax policy and trauma-informed and restorative justice practices to foster a welcoming, safe, and supportive program environment for participant(s) and the community at-large.
  • Supports the development and implementation of program adaptations and modifications to ensure successful inclusion for everyone. 
  • Consults and notifies supervisor about any service navigation and health and human services needs or other issues to ensure successful individual participation in activities, programs, and services. 
  • Professionally engages in development opportunities and collaborative initiatives that align with the organization's strategic direction, mission, and vision, while supporting special projects and programs that advance equity, inclusion, and organizational priorities.

Program Participation and Evaluation 

  • Contributes to program evaluation efforts by identifying areas for improvement, recommend revisions, and propose new services that align with organizational objectives and governance frameworks. 
  • Actively participates in professional learning opportunities by attending meetings, workshops, training sessions and conferences to provide constructive feedback, share lived experiences, and support the alignment of programs with organizational goals, procedures, and best practices. 
  • Assists in conducting comprehensive research on industry trends, governance standards, competitors, and specific projects assigned by the supervisor to inform decision-making and strategic planning.

 
Administrative Duties: 

  • Documents activities and evaluations on forms as required. 
  • Follows all financial management policies and procedures.
  • Uses computer to prepare and complete required documents to include incident, inventory, and storage reports, responds to, and follow ups with, emails and electronic timesheets. 
  • Operates information systems, database management system and customer relationship management systems which includes purchasing membership, program registration, reports, and sales.
  • Documents incidents and completes relevant forms.  
  • Reserves and secures available space for meetings, programs, activities, events, and volunteers.

Physical Requirements: 
Work is generally sedentary. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Administrative and supervisory activities will require ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
